This dog's allele profile tells us its genetics are quite unusual for the breed. It carries a high proportion of mid-frequency and less-common alleles — exactly the type of genetic material that is most at risk of being lost from a closed population and most worth preserving across generations. This is a dog that should remain in the breeding program as long as health and temperament support it. Minor structural imperfections are a reasonable trade-off: improving conformation is possible over generations, but recovering lost allelic diversity in a closed studbook is not. Look for mates with equally high OI, preferably unrelated ones, but in this case if your only options are more related dogs, it is better to linebreed than to lower the OI. Pick puppies with equal or higher OI that are better quality in breed type. Don't breed a high OI dog at all if it is unhealthy or has a bad or dangerous temperament.

More outbredMore inbred

This dog inherited more of the exact same DNA from each parent than is typical for the breed — a clear sign of inbreeding in its ancestry. This means it is more likely to have inherited any unknown or untested simple recessive diseases and traits, so do your testing if you didn't get clearances from its parents. If this dog has a lower OI, but is high quality, breed it, but only to an unrelated dog with equal or better health, temperament and breed type when possible. Pick puppies for your breeding program with high OI and lower IR than this dog's, and ones of equal or better quality. If this dog has a high OI, its inbreeding may actually work in the breed's favor — a more homozygous dog transmits its unusual alleles more consistently to every puppy it produces, meaning its less common genetics are less likely to be diluted in the next generation.

OI and IR are genetic diversity metrics intended to inform breeding decisions at the population level. They do not diagnose disease, predict individual health outcomes, or substitute for breed-required health testing or veterinary guidance. Conformation, temperament, longevity, and health history all belong in this decision.

If you have never met a Scottish Collie, think Lassie… that truly describes their temperament. We have a small property and Finn is so aware of how things should be, if anything is amiss he alerts us right away. He is a watchful guardian and a loyal companion… he absolutely loves his people. When children come to visit he is wholly drawn to them, kids and collies are a natural combination. Finn is abundantly kind, very smart, willing, and joyful.

The two moments breeders have influence on their breed's future are when choosing a mate, and choosing a keeper puppy. Both deserve full genetic information.
